I happen to have a Kane heating pad that has a built in thermostat, etc. Link below.

Can it be used as a heat source in a brooding box or does the heat really need to come from above? It's not flexible so I'm not sure it would work as a mama heating pad plate. Maybe I could put it on stilts to great the gap?

I also have a a hound heater deluxe and wonder if that would make a good heat source as well. I'm not opposed to buying stuff, but since I have things laying around I might as well try to use them. Buying a ceramic heat lamp would be cheaper except I have what I have and they are not being used for anything at the moment.

I think the Kane Poly Pet heater is just fine to use. I think the Hound heater is not because it is forced air/wind. It is also way too much heat source in watts unless you had a giant brooder like for 300 chicks and large area.

Thanks. My version of the houndheater isn't forced, but it is most certainly a higher output. Thank you.

I have heated my chicks from the bottom. Kinda like radiant heat for people. Works very well. I put something on top for them to go into so they feel protected. If you do a search for “ radiant heat “ on here you should be able to find my post with plenty of pictures.

Thanks. I will search for radiant heat and see what I can find.
