Heating water in winter

What do you guys think of this:

Do you think that could be used/modified to keep a chicken water bowl de-iced in winter?

I guess that would depend on the amount of direct sunlight that it would receive in the winter, which could be a little bit of a cr*pshoot...

The ad says that it is only good for a 5-15F degree boost in the warm months. That doesn't bode well for the coldest ones...

Also, snow cover would negate any effect whatsoever...

No I want to hear the negatives...... I would like to try have water outside for the chickens and ducks during winter.... just trying to figure out a way to keep it from freezing solid!
I worry about heaters and such - I "could" probably get one plugged in somewhere, but it would be out in the wet and snow - and I worry as well about the ducks who might HOP in at any given time!

I will have to still change the water a couple of times a day no doubt (dirty ducks) but I'd like to keep it drinkable at least for a couple of hours.

It is a good idea to use the sun to warm frozen water, but the surface and container need to be modified for chickens. They should not be able to stand on top of it and they need to drink from a well of sorts. Neither of these conditions were met by the link info, but there has to be something that can be put together I am sure.

get your thinking caps on... could make $$ from all the people who don't want to electrify their coop or slug water to and fro during the winter!
