I would like to know how to keep my chickens warn for the winter??

That is one great thread. I'd heartily recommend reading a few pages. Frankly, the number of Alaskan and far northern commentators who chimed in made it a valuable resource. I suspect most of your fears and concerns will be alleviated. Best regards.

keep them dry and draft free.....give them fresh food and water...and they will be happy!!!.........and warm!!!!!!!!!!

Do they have a dry, draft free and properly ventilated coop to roost in? That's 99 percent of the solution for most chickens, right there.

If you have a breed of chicken not known to be cold hardy (like, Seramas, for example) or if your chickens are so young they haven't fully feathered out yet, you might need to consider supplemental heat, depending on where you live and how cold winters get there.

Hi lilchic, and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Neither I nor any of my egg-keeping friends up here heat our coops, despite winter temps in the sub zero range in the winter. A good, tight coop with good ventilation, plenty of not-freezing cold water, and food will allow chickens to keep themselves warm in the winter.
