You can find lower wattage red bulbs in the reptile section of petstores. They have everything from 50+ watts up.

I built a 21" wide x 20" high x 6 ft long box (looks like a cheap coffin - real cheap), we're using wood chips/sawdust and a 250W heat lamp inside a cool garage here in rainy and cold W. WA. We have 3 sex link pullets, 5 wks old. The lamp is resting on the 1/4" wire mesh cover at one end of the box. The chicks "self regulate" temperature by grouping together close under the lamp on cool evenings/mornings. as the day warms up they spread out a bit and move back from the heat lamp.
As spring comes on, weather warm up and the chicks continue to grow we will switch to a more engery efficient lamp.
