Heavy breathing, droopy wings....:( week old

Not sure if separating chick right now is a good idea. May cause more stress, which will be dangerous to chick. When chicks are ill, they will stay under heat, they need to be kept warm. If it is cocci, they probably all have it.

Thank you, sorry for all of the questions. We are new to all of this. I have read extensively about everything but it is different when it happens.

I know, there is so much to learn and reading is different than experiencing it yourself. Normally you would definitely separate any sick chickens, but in this case i feel it would do more harm than good.

Nothing has changed this morning. Do you think I should go ahead with the Corid? Unfortunately I am at work now and it will have to wait until I get off. Is this to long to wait?

Get a packet of "Sav-A-Chic" follow the directions and give it a feeding. If the chick seems to be cold or hiding all the time it has probably stopped eating/drinking. Do a drop or two in the mouth, then let it rest. There is a bottle of stuff I get from Southern States that you can put a dab under the wing and it will get rid of a cold. Coccidiosis will leave bloody poop, but I am betting your chick is barely pooping and has an empty crop most of the time. You can also entice it to eat by providing some wet mash food. If the chick is real droopy I found that it won't eat from the feeder and I put wet mash on the floor right beside it.

I have saved two chicks this past week after I lost a frizzle cochin. I was so sad.

Get the corid and start the treatment as soon as you possibly can! Best of luck.
.
Thank you. I ran out from work to TSC and grabbed some Corid and mixed it up and gave it to them, I just couldn't leave it all day and do nothing. Thank goodness I work where I do. :)

Thank you. I gave them them the save a chick probiotics/electrolytes last night, as that is all I had on hand. I was able to run out of work and grab some Corid which they now have. However I am not sure this is the cause of this particular chicks problem. It has breathed heavy since hatch but has gotten worse in addition to wing droop. It has pooped(very little) somewhat soft thought. Sorry for your loss. It is sad. These are my daughters chicks so I am trying to do what I can to make sure they are ok.

It could be chlamydia psittaci. That will give a bird diarrhea on top of the typical signs of respiratory distress.

If so, doxycycline is best but older tetracyclines can also work in a pinch. If medicating the water, have it be the sole water source, mix fresh daily, use acidic or distilled water, and no contact with metal. And no calcium supplements.

I am giving Corid at the moment. However, I don't think there is much change either way. This is day 2 on Corid, so we will see. Thank you! :) this particular chick has breathed heavier than the others since hatch. I am beginning to think a possible birth defect? Maybe under developed lungs? That aren't supporting her growth creating an overall weakness? Just a thought...

I have a week old australorp/red sexlink mix that doesn't seem to be doing very well. Heavy breathing, droopy wings. I feed scratch and peck starter feed, water with acv changed daily. Rubbermaid container, pine bedding with paper towels under. Echo glow 20 heater. They are in the house with the exception of 1/2-1hr out side. The other two seem to progressing very well, however I am concerned with this particular chick. Seems to not be eating/drinking so much and not near as active. Please help. Not sure what to do. she/he just stands there breathing heavy with droopy wings. I prefer a natural remedy if possible. I forgot to mention that no matter how much I clean its vent poo keeps sticking to it. I have been very diligent about cleaning it off. Can't believe I forgot to mention this. :([/quote

Ah! I also wanted to mention that this particular chick has had a broken squeaker since hatch also. Geeish. I am such a bad chick mama. When it chirps it seriously sounds like a broken squeaker in a dog toy. Is any of this related to it not doing well?
