I have a 7 year old hen who is panting heavily and will not leave the barn.
She has not laid in almost 2 years since being attacked by a racoon. (Trauma, trauma +age, either way- she hasn't laid.) I only have 2 hens and 1 rooster, so its easy to know she hadn't been laying.
2 weeks ago I found her in the yard near dusk instead of in the barn with the others. (They normally put themselves to bed amd then we lock them up before dark)
I gave her a warm soak and let her stay inside that night, in an isolated and calm location. She seemed better the next morning.
However, she will not leave the barn. When I brought her down myself, she just found the closest shade and laid down. Its almost as if she does not have the energy to walk up/down from the barn to the yard.. (50 foot-ish)
The panting made me nervous, and she holds her tail down. I thought it may be Coccidiosis bc she showed ALL of the signs except a light combs, her comb actually seemed a little darker, which made me think it may be respiratory.
I started giving her Corid incase it was Coccidiosis. I also started VetRX for respiratory, and Rooster Booster B12.
After the first day of Corid, she was out of the nesting box and I thought we were on the road to recovery. She has not regressed back to staying in the nesting box all day. I would say we are improved from where we were originally, but she still will not leave the barn. She still pants and holds her tail down.
She drinks water great, no problem there. I cannot confirm how much she has been eating, as she never seems to want to eat while I am there. Only drinks.
I have felt all over this chicken.
These are a few things I know:
She is not broody.
She is not eggbound.
Her crop is empty.
Her comb is normal colored.
She has no lice or mites or bugs.
She walks fine.
She drinks fine.
She does not sneeze.
She does not cough.
She does not shake her head.
She does not seem to be in pain or suffering, or even bothered really.
Just heavy breathing, lowered tail, and refusal to leave the barn. Not like shes broody, but like she does not have the energy to.
This is day 13.
Im at my whits end trying to figure out what is wrong with this hen!!
If anyone has and suggestions or information, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
The picture below is when she was inside. I will attach more and a video if I can
