Hector's World: Adventures and Mayhem at Mountain View Poultry (or Sequel to The Evolution of Atlas

Pics
Hector only did that once and even then, Tom wasn't sure what he did since he was on the hammock with his eyes closed and was hit in the leg. Other than that, he hasn't done anything since he was really young and used to bite sometimes. He's never flogged me or anyone else, still not 100% sure that the hammock incident was.

I wanted to comment on the fact that Hector is really coming into his own as a leader of this newly assembled flock. Zara jumped on Thea and Hector was immediately in the middle to separate Zara from his girl. He has stopped so many fights and hasn't been lazy about it, either. I'm so proud of him. He has decided that he, Thea and Jill will sleep on top of the big portable nest box rather than on the roost every night, not sure why, but whatever he wants, he can have since he's being so good. And he gets his chest rub every night, same as always.

This is so good to hear. It gives me hope that someday I may be able to have a lovely rooster. Congratulations on your good boy!

He was such a challenge for me in the beginning, kept us on our toes, never knowing if he'd do the one thing that would earn him his ticket out of here. But, he's so intelligent and as my friend Ladyhawk said from the start, he had a soft eye. I saw it, too, but I was also dealing with his Little Tyrant tendencies from about 6 weeks old onward.

When he would not really allow Jane and Maddie to join Thea and Jill in his small group, was so mean to them, I thought he'd never be much use to me here. I can only breed from Jill because of Thea's wry tail, plus she is quite small. But, now he is in this larger group and I've seen him mate Athena a number of times (too bad I can't breed from her, either, knowing she carries a dwarf gene). Every day gets a bit better and soon, I bet he'll have even won over Witchy Wendy. I can still only breed from Jill, Maddie and Jane in that group, but at least now, they have a rooster on guard during free range time.
