Hector's World: Adventures and Mayhem at Mountain View Poultry (or Sequel to The Evolution of Atlas

One of the difficult things in dealing with animals is understanding their motivations. What if he had a headache that day? Who knows? Something had obviously put him out of sorts, and he needed some space.

You are right, hard to say what's in the mind of a rooster sometimes. One thing that has them all out of sorts is this wet weather and them having to spend more time inside than normal. But, if that's all it is, Atlas and Bash are not being buttheads. Hector is admittedly the most energetic of the three.

Today, I drew Hector's attention to the area just in front of the perimeter fence where DH had whacked down a lot of brush. DH had mentioned that he hit a small snake, but we could not find it. Jill and Thea were at the fence when suddenly, Jill grabbed something and ran. She found the snake. It was intact, but dead. It appeared to be a grayish color on top, white underneath and the impression of the head I got as she was playing keep-away with me was that it was non-poisonous, but she was trying so hard to run away with her treasure, I'm not really sure. She ate the head, then she slurped down the entire snake! Blech! It was maybe 10-12" long, about as big around as a pencil. So, hopefully, my impression was correct and it was non-venomous. I mean, what happens when a chicken eats a poisonous snake? Anything? I've never really thought about it.

Hey, girl. Hope you're doing okay. We've had nothing but rain for weeks, it seems.

Hector has been good as gold since the biting incident. Not sure what got into him that day. Maybe he had cabin fever.

Rowena seems to be relapsing. She had two days of big doses of penicillin, followed by a week of Duramycin in her water and was completely bloat-free, but I think she's acting off again and I believe I feel some poochiness back in her belly again. My gut says do not treat this again. It's good that I have one pullet coming up for Hector's pen, though she's only about 9 weeks old. She has excellent size on her and I am calling her MaryJo for Jill's sister, Mary, who died way too young.
