BYC is the best place, that's for sure.

This is the Atlas thread. Atlas is my now three-year-old Barred Rock rooster. Hector came along much, much later, in May of last year, though he was only one among a dozen BR chicks back then, completely unrelated to Atlas or any of Atlas's relatives.

Hector out today with his five girls on this windy day. Athena and Zara still live in their old pen, mainly because of Rowena, who is a mean woman, being older and bossy as the day is long, though little Thea is really in charge in Hector's pen. She is still clucking her head off but has not stuck to a nest yet. She comes running to me, clucking, flares out her feathers, but wants me to pick her up. Silly thing. So, Thea bosses Ro and Ro bosses Jill, Zara and Athena.







Here, you can see Hector's width, which is his best feature, I think. Hey @1muttsfan The Little Tyrant isn't so little anymore, is he? He's still full of himself, though. Doubt that will change. (sent you a PM, Mary)

At long last Hector finally has his own thread! I hope that boy will have a level head, he's got big shoes to fill. So excited to see how his life and his girls evolve over time.

Glad you found the thread. I know you wanted Hector to have his own show for awhile. I think he finally earned it! It's been nasty weather recently or I'd have more pictures up of the big goofball. Will add some when they can get out and about more.

Rowena continues to cause trouble. I tried to put Apollo's former girls, Athena and Zara, into the pen with Hector. Not happening yet. They free range when his group does, but in a close space, Thea bullies them (she is still acting semi-broody), Ro bullies Jill and attacks the new girls. Zara is a bit more dominant than slightly older Athena so she is less likely to back down. It's a brawl every time. So I let those two go back to their usual pen and Hector's bunch to his. Sigh. I wanted that pen!

So you go from having problems with roosters getting along and then solve that problem, now you have hens who will fight to see who's at the top. Sheesh. If only they could all get along. Has Hector ever tried to break up any of their fights?

He does occasionally, not not always. He is more inclined to stop fights if one of the participants is not one of his girls.
