My coturnix babies are all growing up and I need to get their pens finished. I already know i want to make them 2 ft x 2ft for a trio, but does anyone have a recommended height for the cages? Thank you all in advance, you have been so helpful!

they dont have to be tall, since they dont "roost" but they will jump and hit their heads... id say maybe 18-24"?? mine is 30" tall... 78"long ad 36" wide...with a removeable divider

I have some of my birds in one cage with a plywood roof and it is only about 10 to 12 inches high. I have actually had 3 birds break their necks flying up and hitting the roof in the short of a distance.

My other pen has hardware cloth between the roof and the birds and have had no deaths. The hardware cloth 'gives' so they cannot get hurt as easily. I would definitely keep the height of the cage very low unless you want to loose some birds. All it takes is someone walking by the cage in the dark or an animal under the cage and they will fly straight up as hard as they can fly.

One should measure a fully stretched out bird then add maybe an inch should be sufficient . The lower the height of the wire the less speed that the bird can generate when flushing up before hitting it's jead on the wire will cause the least amount of dammage. Conversely, the higher the wire top is , the more speed is generated by the bird and more damage will result at the point of impact.

Mine bonk their heads on a 4' ceiling, but it's the insulation foam board, so it doesn't hurt them.

Hey Mac!

Was wondering if you could share any pics of your setup?
