Height of Chicken Wire

You need to worry your chickens are protected from flying predators in their run, as much from raccoons and others that dig under a run. Hardware cloth on the floor of the run will stop predators. Hardware cloth on the run walls and also on top of the run will keep your chickens as safe as safe can be. No chicken wire. No 2x4 fencing. Both of these a racoon can pull your chicken through...at least capitate them!

The only wire I can find is 4 feet tall

You can get welded wire in 6 ft heights, and any place that sells wire should be able to order a roll for you

It doesn't HAVE to be hardware cloth or even a small mesh to keep out most daytime predators

the fence supply near me has 6 ft. chicken wire

" My other thought is that chickens can never be predator proof. So why bother. Other than getting chickens eaten. But then they will be locked in the coop house at night anyways."

Well, in that case, skip the run altogether and let them free range during the day, then lock them in at night.

It's their outside run and they're only out during the day. My one and only problem with a predator was with raccoons at night in my enclosed coop. I've since used the old fly bait trick and no more 'coon problem.

What exactly is the "old fly bait trick"?

There's a fly poison called Golden Malrin that can be mixed with Coca Cola and it will kill anything that drinks it.

It's not a good thing to have around if you don't want to risk killing any animal that comes along
