I am new to chickens. We had them growing up, but I never paid the least bit of attention to them except pick the eggs up every morning and feed and water them. I was given 2 game hens (Matilda and Hattie) and a rooster (Cogburn.) I thought I had been diligent in removing the eggs because I did NOT want babies. All I wanted was a couple fresh eggs a day and to sit and watch them.
I am going to post in the raising babies section since I have a surprise addition to the flock. Anyone who says chickens are stupid should meet my Hattie. She out smarted me big time LOL.

Well, welcome to byc.

First, get some flock raiser. You'll need it for the little chicks. Your older chickens will be ok eating it too. Just feed the egg shells from the other hen back to her so she gets her calcium needs. Layer feed/mash/crumbles ARE BAD BAD BAD for chicks. Need to get a chick water-er as well, so the chicks don't fall in and drown.

Other than that, Don't worry. Mama hen will know what to do. You only need provide fresh food and water. She will do the rest.

Thanks for making me welcome! Chick is back with Mom, she accepted him/her just fine. DH and DS put him out while I was gone for a feather duster and feed LOL. They are contained in their own area now, and the nest is on the ground in a huge mound of shavings with hay on top of that. I have a plate for the chick and Mom has a bowl that is to big for the chick to get into until Monday when I can get another water dish.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the replies in the chick thread!!! I didn't want to kill Chick by doing something or not doing something.
