Hello everyone! This is my first official post in BYC! My name is Chelsea. Born and raised in MI. I have a wonderful husband, Ingo (that's German), and we have three daughters. And as of this past may, we have 11 hens (5 Easter eggers, 6 buff orps), 1 rooster (Easter egger) and two pekin ducks (male and female aka Django and Broomhilda). We are new to poultry, but avid animal lovers and also very into gettin back to the simple kind of life.

I learned a ton on BYC before officially joining, and I figured, why go this journey alone?? I could share it will you guys !! So here I am.

First order of business: my first official question.. All my little honeys live together in a large shed that was converted into a coop with a large attached run. They all go out in the morning and get locked up at night. I have yet to put nest boxes in (but plan to do so this week), and this had me wondering about a nest for my female duck. So I have read that she will make her own basically.. I know she won't be laying for a while, but wouldn't she like some straw to make a bed out of now ? And will her and the drake sleep next to each other in this bed ? And if and when she decides to lay, will she do so in this bed? Or is a nest and a bed two different things for a duck ? I guess I want to know should I just throw her some straw or build a nest box? And if this nest box/ bed should be large enough for the drake to sleep in it with her (if this is the case). Thanks to all!!

So glad you joined us. Don't know about ducks, but if you don't get the answers you need on that subject, the post the question under the duck forum and bet those with experience can help.

Welcome to BYC!

You will find a lot of good information here. Keep on asking questions and you will get many good answers.

You may also want to read the FAQ below.

I never really thought about ducks sleeping together but, I'm sure I will now. I'll have to drop in on the duck threads and find out for myself when I have a chance. You can find the duck threads at "Other backyard poultry" forum which includes geese, guineas, quail, peafowl, emus, and other 'ordinary' birds.
