I am Amanda, and my fiance and I will be bringing home 9 straight-run (from a local breeder, so ACTUAL as hatched straight-run) blue laced red wyandotte chicks one week from tomorrow! We're hoping for at least a couple of girls to keep for pets/eggs, and all the boys will be going to the freezer, which I'm still a little bit apprehensive about, when the time comes I think I'll be looking around for a local farmer or butcher to either do the processing for me this time, or at least walk me through it.
We live in town, in Cheney, WA,(about 20 mins south of Spokane) where there SEEM to be no specific rules on in town chicken keeping. All that I've found is that chickens are defined as "small animals" and raising small animals (along with fruit raising and gardening xD) is considered a secondary use of property in the zone we live in! Sounds good to me.
We live in a house that was built over 100 years ago and part of the garage (it's separated from the house and has pretty much only been used for storage) USED to be a chicken coop! I'm going to be renovating part of it so that it's safe/livable for the chickens, and as a very amateur carpenter it's going to be a rather large project for me, mostly re-opening the windows the previous owner closed up and put siding over, and adding a half wall and screening to what is going to be the divider between the coop area and the rest of the garage storage area. Wish me luck!
Once the babies get here and I start construction on the coop, expect photos to come!
This forum/site has been a wonderful resource in my new chicken adventure.
