Hi all, we have a few acres and a cabin that we love in the middle of the Shasta/Trinity National Forest. We have been raising White Silkies for the past 10 years. We have had other color silkies and a number of Cochin hens. The non-white silkies have not survived nor did the Cochin. Most of the time those chickens met their ends at the pleasure of predatory eagles, hawks, owls, skunk and ring tailed cat. Only the whites seem to hang in there. We are down to 10 from 20 birds over the past couple of years but plan to double our flock again in the spring.
Please check out the predator's section, (also the Coop section) it has a lot of advice on protecting your birds; ie - building a stronger structure, using the appropriate hardware cloth along the bottom "chickenwire" for reinforcement, enclosing the top of the run with metal wire instead of plastic netting and other ideas for prevention of predators....Good luck and take care of those chooks! There are a lot of "Fort Knox's" examples out there, please note....
