Hello all from the toolies of Northern Calif

Thank you for the warm welcome and thanks for the advice on protecting the flocks. We now have "Fort Birdie" for the chickens to redoubt and we no longer have incursions into their sanctuary. (Keeping fingers crossed and staying vigilant) However, they are free range during the day and the occasional air borne predator has taken a few over the past several years. The last time it was an eagle who was willing to play tug of war with my wife over one silly little white silkie. The Eagle got the best of the struggle and dragged the chicken 20 ft to get air borne only to drop the chicken as the raptor left the ground. You know that little silkie is doing just fine after the ordeal. Crazy stuff huh? That was a full grown golden eagle and could well have made a mess out of my dear wife in a real fight. Well what are you gonna do? We live in the middle of some of the largest unbroken expanses of National Forest and Wilderness left in the lower 48 states. That means that nature rules here. But in the end where does it not.

The thing about our birds is that we understand that we will do all we can to protect them in their safe haven but they live in freedom and sometimes (but very seldom) pay the price for that freedom. I think we have a lot to learn from them.
