Hello all, wood duck question

Hello all, I realize this forum is about chickens but I'm raising a wood duck and was wondering if anyone here has wood ducks & if you let wood ducks out of their run during the day? I let mine out, he Flys off most of the day and comes back home before dark. Is this normal? Will he/she always do this? Not sure yet if it's female or male but I hope it's a drake! I've noticed a little red on its beak so maybe it is.

my mallards would fly and return but I was always told by my buddy who raises docs once the Woody's get out in the open they are gone you are truly lucky
