We have a Buckeye hen who is a sweet, active and curious girl (and is named after Nettie Metcalfe). She started laying about when we expected, and she eats the same food as the rest of the flock. All of our hens have free access to oyster shells. She looks very healthy. But the shells of her eggs are very poor quality. Rough, thin, and extremely fragile. None of the other hens has this problem. Have any of you experienced this, and do you have any suggestions for what she might need?

Thank you all, for any advice!

I miss my buckeyes! I had 2 beautiful, mellow , slightly daft ,buckeye girls. One of them occasionally had shells with a rough bit of bumpiness to the texture. They were never thin or fragile though, so I never really looked into a cause. I don't know if that's a coincidence or a breed thing? I hope your hen stays healthy and you figure out a solution.

When one bird has problems laying good eggs, it's the bird not the diet.
You might try giving her some extra calcium by separating her with a special 'treat'(some wet mash with a calcium citrate with VitD crushed in to it).
