I am completely new at having chickens so I have a lot to learn. I am planning on starting my new venture of raising chickens next spring so between now and then I will no doubt need a ton of advice.

I live in Minnesota with my hubby, Frank, and our obnoxious hound dog Cooper. We have had our property for quite some time but we started off fixing up the place and now we're ready to embark on making it a hobby farm.

We thought chickens would be a good place to start. Eventually adding other animals in small quantities.

so glad you decided to join us.

IMO studying and planning now for a next year spring flock is the perfect way to start.

If you haven't already explore the site, there are loads of helpful articles on raising and managing your own flock.

And there are so many great examples in the Coops/runs forums to help you decide what will fit your needs.

If you have a choice, start with baby chicks, seeing them grow up is an experience I would not have missed.

Have fun, explore the forums. Feel free to ask questions, we're here to help.

Hi Deb! Welcome!

Hi Cooper too! Love a hound dog! Chickens are such a joy. Fun to watch and ohhhh the fresh eggs! Here's a link to your state thread, you might drop in and have a look on some posts to get housing and husbandry ideas from your neighbors. There is also a forum for other pets and livestock you may find interesting. https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/22/other-pets-livestock Best of luck to you!

Welcome to BYC - Cooper doesn't sound like he would be chicken friendly. Dogs + chickens usually = dead chickens. Best if they never meet.
