I'm about a year into my first flock of chickens, and this site has been my most reliable guide. I have plenty of exposure to live poultry for food and eggs, but I choose mine specifically as pets. A chicken that lives past the two year mark is an anomaly in my area. Even though I have no issue with that school of thought quality of life for any of my wards is very important to me. The advice from this site has been a sanity saver. I'm very grateful to those brave enough to ask questions, and those generous enough to answer.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. There are as many opinions as there are members ( over 380,000 around the globe. People need to do what feels right to them. You will encounter many folks on here that have retirement coops for elderly hens, disabled birds, etc., Also those that cull or cook any bird that no longer pulls their weight.
