I've been looking at this website since I bought five little silkies in February. The two black ones turned out to be roosters so my husband found a couple who wanted them as we live in town and couldn't keep them. I have three white ones left. I put a small coop in my greenhouse. They sleep in it but otherwise just peck around in my yard.I cut the back out of an old rain barrel and put straw in it. That seems to be the go to place to lay. It's light so I can leave it in the greenhouse or set it outside in the shade..They always find it. These are truly sweet little hens and I enjoy watching them...and of course the eggs are wonderful. Anyway, I've come to appreciate this site and have learned so much. It's great!

:welcome

Your Silkies sound like a lot of fun...glad you are enjoying them!

Silkies are a very popular breed for many reasons. They tend to make excellent "broody" mothers- they like to hatch eggs and raise the chicks. Since you don't have roos, if you ever bought fertile eggs (of any breed) and put them under a hen who is being broody, they will hatch and raise the chicks as their own.

You may like to discover more about them through the various silkie threads. My favorite is called "Silkie thread."
