Hello all, We have just ordered our coop and are planning on getting 4 hens. I would like a brown egg layer. Any help where we should look for our new brood? We have never had hens b4

Congrats on getting into chickens!!

Depends on if you want to start with started pullets, hens or chicks. Most feed stores carry chicks in the spring time, usually starting in March and into April. Some hatcheries carry started pullets, (young birds just starting to lay) or you can go to our Where Am I Where Are You section and chat with others in your state. Just look for your state among the posts and post there. You might locate someone nearby that has the birds you seek...

Hi! you're in the right place. I'm new to raising chickens and this site has really been a lifesaver! . I'd check the forum for folks in your state. Lots of folks here can steer you in the right direction on good breeders but you might be able to find a breeder in your area that someone has used and can recommend. I have Marans and they lay beautiful dark brown eggs. Good luck!
