My partner, Jeff and I have had chickens in our backyard since 2006 and have hatched them all from eggs in the incubator. We currently have three silver-laced Wyandottes, one white Wyandotte and three Barnvelder's. We also have three, three day old Barnvelder's chicks. All three hatched in the incubator on Friday and unfortunately, the fourth chick that hatched on Friday did not survive. We are hoping the three news ones are hens as our Wyandottes are now in their fifth year and egg production is starting to slow down quite dramatically. The three Barnvelder's will be two years old in May this year and lay every day. We also have three male and two female Chinese Quail, six baby Chinese Quails and one female Japanese Quail, plus a pair of Turquoisines in the aviaries.

Our chickens are all hand-reared and come when we call so worming, etc is no problem. They allow us to pick them up, dust them for lice, dose them for worms, etc and if Jeff is bending over, they will attempt to fly up on to his back and sit on his shoulder!! As very young birds, they would sit on his shoulder and he would hand feed them bits of silverbeet. Even now they are fully grown, they still try to sit on his shoulder.
