Hello everyone

I just wanted to say hi and thanks for having us. My family and I are from the shenandoah valley in Virginia. We have a little farm nestled at the foothills of the blueridge mountains. We are starting an organic pick your own operation. Fruits and vegitables will be the main focus as well as a small pumpkin patch, corn maze and petting zoo for the local youngsters. We raise chickens, ducks, turkeys, rabbits, potbelly pigs and mini goats. As well as a few wild critters that call the homestead home. While I was raised on and worked many farms growing up, I am still learning everyday and hope to learn some valuable information here. Cant wait to talk all things farming with everyone!
Have a blessed day

Sounds like you have some fun projects going on in your life. Make yourself at home here on BYC and welcome to our flock!

vahomesteaders that is a nice Homestead you have going there was any of the fence up before you started or did you put out for all the pens also ????

I only ask as I had fencing around the 600 foot X 180 Foot I have here and it took me 4 years to pay it off by small payments ..... but it was $10.000 US Dollars and they said I got a good deal so I did not argue as the two legged predators were worse then the four legged ones .....

No. We put up all the fencing. We lucked out in that dept. My neighbor who is a retired farmer had a bunch of fencing laying around in a scrap field and we used a good bit of that then shopped around in the classifieds for cheap deals. We did by some new but probably only have about $400.00 in all our fencing. I have a sawmill and milled most of my post and also utilized standing trees on the property. We try to be as cost efficient as possible.

Wow that sounds like the better way to go about putting up fencing as your 400 was about my payment for 3 years after interest and all ....

But the saw mill I know I would not be able to run anymore and that is probably why the V.A. pay the 100% every month but believe me I would rather be my old self again ......

Good luck with your Homestead hope you are around a long time for everyone to enjoy it
