Hi I live in Spanaway, Washington. We have 11 chicks. 4 RIR, 2 buff orpingtons, 2 barred rock, 2 red sexlink and 1 golden sexlink. had 2 golden sexlink but one died a few days after we got them. They are all around 5 weeks old now and we just moved them out of the brooder. i still have the heat lamp in the coop since it is getting down to 38 degrees at night. We plan to keep them just for eggs and as pets. Here are some attached pictures of my coop and chicks. It was hard to place the coop since the law here is 15 ft. from any side of residence. it is exactly 15 ft from the neighbors house on the back and 15ft from mine on the front. I think I still need to add a large vent on this front side. It is a work in progress. -- Jared

Nice coop and run. Coops need to be draft free AND well ventilated. If you visit the coop section I'm sure you can read about how that is done. I would replace the wire on the run with 1/2" hardware cloth which is a much better deterrent to predators than flimsy poultry wire. Welcome to Backyard chickens, hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Glad you could join the flock! Nice coop but yes you will need good ventilation in it. They produce quite a lot of moisture from their breath and poop and it needs to be able to escape. Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. X2 on drumstick diva's advice. I'm not sure what kind of predators you have in your area, but if you have raccoons, weasels, minks, snakes, cats, dogs, rats, or other predators that can get into your yard, I would cover that chicken wire with hardware cloth. There are just too many predators that can tear through chicken wire, or squeeze through the openings in the mesh. Using hardware cloth will cost some extra money, but it's cheaper than replacing your flock. Hardware cloth has saved many chicken owners a lot of tears. Also, if you have raccoons in the area, I would either put a padlock or a double action latch on the coop door as raccoons can very quickly figure out how to open a single action latch. ) . It sounds like you have a nice flock with some excellent breeds.
