Hello and Happy New Year!

I am brand new to keeping chickens, just got my small coop and run combo today. The plan is to build a nice pen to keep predators our and our small flock in and safe. I hope to start out with 3-4 hens, we can't have roosters where I live.
I don't know where we're getting our chicks from yet, but am excited to get started!
A few things I was curious about ...
When you buy chicks, can I be sure to just buy hens?
What do the chicks eat? same thing as mature birds?

I'm sure I'll find my answers here somewhere.
:)
Welcome to BYC!!
You can never be sure if you’re getting a hen or a rooster, even if they’re labeled as females.
Chicks eat later crumbles, which are smaller than regular pellets.
