I have previously read many articles here and believe this to be a great source of information. I started with chickens about 1 year ago with 8 chickens, we only have 3 of those 8 remaining due to predators. We also adopted 11 chickens from a friend who could no longer keep them and have added 6 baby chicks about 4 weeks ago.
My flock now consist of 1 Java, 2 Rhode Island Reds, 11 Barred Rocks - all grown and laying eggs. The 6 chicks consist of 4 Sapphire Plymoths and 2 Olive Eggers.

They are all free range (except for the baby's) and are fed Organic egg layers pellets. I have seen the impact feed can make on the chicken and the eggs and only want the best for the chickens as I know Happy Hens lay great tasting eggs.

We live in Northeast Texas in a small rural community of 3500 people. We of course are getting way more eggs than we can eat and have begun selling our eggs at the local farmers market. I have enjoyed very much taking care of the chickens and continue to learn a lot about them.

My reason for joining was to ask a few questions and join in the conversations on the forums.

Hi there. some may not like our solution. We eliminate the threat, 1 coyote and 1 opposeum. Needless to say, the ones remaining have learned and they have now made friends with the cows and horses that help to protect them. We do make sure they are secure every night, so we don't worry about them overnight and get some needed rest ourselves.

Welcome to byc!! Glad you could join the Flock! Let me know if you need anything!:wee:woot:welcome:highfive::yesss:
Thank you. I never knew the attraction to raising my own chickens until I had my own. My husband is always looking for things for me to do. This one I gladly accepted. He now calls me the pied piper of chickens.

We've only named 3 of ours, the original girls we had: Henretta, Reba & Red. I'm not real good with naming creativity. since the Barred Rocks were adopted, we are working on the relationship. Only 1 of the 11 will allow us to pet her, the others run scared as they were not handled much as chicks. Our new chicks are getting names: Pretty Girl (she was a little sickly so had to hold her-doing much better now), Freckles, Black Beak, Silver Foxie. More names to come.
