G'day all, my names Katie, I'm from Melbourne, Australia. I have one fur baby, my Allie cat and four hens
Korra - Isa brown,
Red - RIR,
HonkyDumbDumb - RIR,
Zoom - Bantam Australorp

This weekend we have just added four bantam australorps to our family, and I'm having some problems which I thought someone may be able to assist with?

On 8.10.16 we picked up 4 one day old chicks 3 of them were fine when we got them home and were eating and drinking. There is one that we never saw eat or drink. She didn't open her eyes until the second day and she seems very unbalanced; always walking backwards and falling over.

I started hand feeding her electrolytes but she won't eat anything solid, not even chick mash.

Today I gave her some plain yoghurt. No pasty butt. She just sits under the heat lamp and chirps, makes no attempt to eat or drink.

At first I thought she was blind but she watches me walk around and recognises the food I feed her on.

Any suggestions on what this might be, what we can do for her, etc? I have ordered some poultry vitamins to give her as well.

Anything anyone could offer will be incredibly appreciated.

Katie

Hello, and welcome to Backyard chickens! So glad you joined us, but sorry to hear about the chick! Sometimes chicks just do not thrive, no matter how hard you try. In my experience, with every batch of chicks, one or two will not make it, and it is usually not your fault. Just some fluke thing like a vitamin deficiency, but it sounds like to are doing all the right things, so I wish you luck! I hope you enjoy BYC!!!

G'Day Katie, it's very nice to meet you. The only times I've heard of a chick/chicken walking backwards were from wry neck or blow to the head (neurological problems). Hope someone here will be able to assist you.

Thanks for the warm welcome all.

I'm afraid my little girl isn't getting any better... she was fine feeding by hand yesterday but I can barely get anything in her anymore. All she does is sleep and chirp. I am thinking about asking if the breeder we got her from will take her back? I feel as though I am fighting a losing battle with this little one.

Any suggestions on how we should move forwards?
