Hello! I'm Melissa. I am so happy to have found this forum. I'm a homeschooling mom of four who grew up in the city and had zero chicken experience. We moved to Central Florida for my husband's job and ended up buying a house on 5 acres. It happened to have a chicken coop, and I exclaimed immediately that we would not have chickens. Well, after being given 4 Barred Plymouth Rock hens from a relative, I found myself hooked, and we brought home 5 pullets and a rooster last spring. We also ended up buying 6 assorted bantams this year and I can't wait to see what we have.
My husband just shakes his head and laughs at me for loving the chickens after being so determined we would never have them.
I have already found this forum very useful and wanted to thank you all for the excellent advice you all give. I think I would be lost without being able to hop on here and do a quick search. One of the chicks we brought home yesterday was not opening its little eye. We figured it got pecked on the way home. This morning, neither of its eyes seemed able to open. Thanks to others on this board having similar issues, I learned Neosporin may be the best cure. Sure enough, both of the eyes are now open and the little chick is much calmer and happier. So, thank you!!!!
