Hello everyone,

I am brand new to owning chicks, but I've been wanting them for quite a while now. My fiance and I lived in a condo and it took us a few years to find the right house with a bit of land in the city... then we had to renovate it... and FINALLY its time to raise some chickies! We decided to raise chickens for their eggs, fertilizer and company.

Our babies hatched one week ago today- we ordered them from My Pet Chicken, they hatched Monday and they arrived the next morning at our local post office. Their coop is in progress and seems like its on track to be complete in time. I hope to post soon over in the coop forum our plans and pictures for the "Phoenichen" coop! If anyone is familiar with Phoenix, you may have heard of a fancy resort called the Phoenician, so the running joke is that our girls will have just a coop just as lavish as that hotel

So we have a total of 8 (hopefully) hens: 2 blue silkies, 2 easter egger bantams, 1 white crested black polish, 1 golden laced polish, 1 blue splash marans, and 1 barred rock. It was hard to narrow down my choices!

We started them on Scratch and Peck's chick feed and grit. Once they work their way through that, I plan to feed them a homemade whole grain organic (as much as possible) mix. I'm currently researching recipes, would like to hear if anyone has found one they like!

So, without further ado, introducing the baby Phoenichens:

Arrival!

Billie (Idol) - white crested black polish

Luella "Lulu" - blue silkie

Minnie - blue silkie

tenatively named Harriet "Hattie" (aka Big Head!) - golden laced polish

their current digs

Today was their first play date outside :)

tenatively named Paulette (shes quite shy, she doesn't like to look at the camera!) - blue splash marans

love the little silkie twins!

tenatively named Evie - easter egger bantam

Ginger "Ginny" (aka Paprikash) - easter egger bantam

Dotty - barred rock (shes very hyper, barely sat still for any pictures)

Thank you! lol I know! I wasn't sure if that was normal for her breed... shes almost like an ostrich!

One of my black sex links always stretched out her neck. And she always made weird noises too. She reminded me more of a goose or turkey then a tiny little chick
