Hello BackYard Chicken friends!

Hello to all! I'm new to this site! Just wanted to say hello and see if I could get some advice for our Daisy. I went up to check on our cows for tonight and get all the chickens in their coop since they are true grazers and we found Miss Daisy our 10 month old chicken in the cows water. She was swimming around and didn't go under from what I could tell but she was shivering and almost completely drenched. I imediately brought her in and gave her warm dry towels and put her by a heat lamp and have a light heater on her to help keep her warm. She's not shivering anymore and seems to be breathing good. But I am wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else and their chickens have pulled through. They had plenty of water so I don't know why she would have went near the cows water, but needless to say it looks like we have an overnight guest in the house tonight. I hope she makes it.

Welcome to backyard chickens! Yes, I'm sure she'll be alright. I think she's just scared. Give her plenty of treats, she'll perk up!

Hi and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. Thats a new one on me, but as long as she is now dry, then I would not imagine there should be any long term effects.

She is a very lucky girl that you found her and I agree with the others that after some warmth and TLC she should be OK.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

She may have flown or fallen in. Or maybe she was perched there and a cow nudged her in. In any case her feathers probably got water logged and she was too heavy to fly out. It's not uncommon for chickens to drown in stock tanks or to take a dive in someone's outdoor pool. They need to be protected from it like young children.

Oh no! Glad you were able to save her. If she seems dry and warm right now, she should be fine within the next couple of days at most. I have not heard of an instance like this, but I have heard of where chickens love going out and getting soaked in the pouring rain. They look like a wet rat but they are just fine. I'm thinking same goes for your Daisy!
