Sandicakes
In the Brooder
My name is Sandra and my lifelong dream of being a chicken/duck mom has finally come true. My family moved from town (DEAD CENTER) to a 5 acre home in a new place out in the middle of nowhere!! I am in heaven. So far I am doing the best I can with what little knowledge I have. I have read books, blogs, websites and even subscribed to magazines. I have really pretty much gone OCD with this new adventure.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We got our chickens beginning of May. We started with 8 little chicks. My daughter picked out 4 and I picked out the rest. She chose the fancy ones. You know the ones that lay colorful eggs and I chose Leghorns. Or what I thought were Leghorns. Their tails are slightly different. 2 have long tail fathers and the other two have regular fluff tails. Unfortunately one of my DD's chicks got eaten by my brothers dog (total accident, and they even had chicken wire covering the bins) and her other Americana developed Cross beak pretty early on. She is still alive but growing very slowly. After that accident with the dog we went back and got 4 more chicks because I just love them so much. 3 of the 4 are thriving the last one that my daughter of course took a liking to PenPen (because she looked like a pen had leaked on her back) dead of what we can only assume was twisted neck. We did the whole vitamins and supplements.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We currently have 10.
(3) What breeds do you have?
4 Leghorn
1 Faverolle
1 Americana
2 Orphington
1 Delaware
1 Cochin
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I found it when I was asking questions about cross beak
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love to paint, knit and really just love to CRAFT.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Husband puts up with me and my crazy ideas. He is the one that usually builds me the shelters, furniture and really anything else I need or want.
3 kids
1 Great Dane (Pablo)
1 Hamster (Sir Hams-a-lot) Hammie for short
2 Cats (Harley, Frank)
1 Duck (Sarah) Campbell
