Hello Everyone,

First off my name is Melissa. I have just now started raising chickens (just started as in I just bought my first chicks yesterday). I have a lot of questions. I got my chicks from a private breeder (I was told they were bantams, but I am not sure). Because some are much more larger then other ones. All being the same age. I know that Bantams are supposed to be a smaller chicken, and some are, but I believe that we got some American Game Chickens in with the Bantams. I also bought 6 from Tractor Supply. 3 Bantams and 3 Bullits. I got a silver bantam (he has feathers on his legs),an almost all black one, with a little white spot on the top of his/her head, and a brown, black and white stripped one. The sex is unknown on them, but the 3 bullits are all hens and they are just a golden/brown color (but still very beautiful). I am not sure on the age, the ones from tractor supply are still fuzzy chicks, but the other ones are 4 wks old. And like I said I am not entirely sure on species. I know that at leas 2 are bantams because I have seen the color variation before. I have a very basic idea I believe the biggest Male might be a RIR, but there is also another one that is a silver grey color, also quite large compared to the others. I will try and get the pics up of the ones I am confused about as soon as they get all feathers, right now they are "Quilly" and only have wing feathers and some sticking out here and there.

Hi Melissa, and welcome to BYC! If you have any questions we're here to help!

Yes, bantams are supposed to be smaller.
If you got them from TSC, they're probably around 2 days to a week old.

I've never heard of a Bullits.

Pics would be great!

I did read them wrong. But what are "pullets" I mean besides hens? They just a whatever breed of chicken?

So glad you could join BYC! Congratulations on the beginning of your chicken adventures. Bringing home baby chicks can be so exciting and addicting! Sounds like you have a nice variety. If you want to find out for sure what their breeds are, just post some photos in the What Breed or Gender section that Kelsie2290 linked to. Members will be happy to help identify them! In response to your second question, "pullets" are young hens less than a year old. Female chicks, of any breed, are called pullets until they are a year old.

Welcome to our flock and I hope you enjoy BYC as much as we do! Good luck with your chicks.

Ah ok, well gee that really doesn't help me on what they are then. The tag just said "pullets" they didn't state the breed of the chickens. They are yellowish brown and one is a little darker brown. I posted pictures up on the "what are these" posting board. I figure they probably just the standard kind of chicken.

I was really excited when I brought these guys home, they are very cute and they make you just want to hug them and cuddle with them. The bigger chicks that I had gotten are very skittish and flip out whenever I stick my hand in the box to change they're water and food. I guess I just have to work with them when I can to get them a little socialized with humans. My husband was raised up with chickens so he is a big help. The only thing is, he sees them as a commodity and not as a pet. I have my 3 bantam chicks I the house in a small box with a heat source at the moment because they are just to small to keep in with the larger chickens. I am afraid they will get trampled and die. They also are so small they can't reach the water dish that I have in there for the others. So I separated them from the rest of the others. There are the three pullets that are in there with the bigger ones but they are thriving and doing great. They are big enough where they can easily reach the water dish, and are big enough where the others won't accidently trample them.
