Hello, BYC! New member intro!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

If you bought a kit there's no way you're going to fit that many chickens in it. If it's anything like most of the kits that Tractor Supply sells, you wouldn't want to put more than two chickens in that with an additional run attached. If there's any way that you could return that kit I would do it and build a proper coop. That would be an awesome learning experience for your boys too!
It will actually accommodate 10 chickens, but we didn't want to crowd them. Thanks for your input though!

If you think it's going to accommodate 10 chickens because that's what the package said I'm afraid you're in for a very unpleasant reality check. Chickens require 3.5 - 4 square feet of floor space per bird and that does not include nest boxes. The run should offer a bare minimum of 10 but 15 square feet per bird is much better for them. There is no kit coop that I'm aware of that offers that.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe Tractor Supply isn't the only place that sells kits? Our chickens will have more than enough space, but I do appreciate your concern. Again, my husband is an engineer and is going to custom build a run. I wasn't looking for feedback, I filled this form out because it was a requirement to join the forum. Have a great day!

I'm aware of this, yes. I was comparing the kits that TS sells to the other typically available. I was merely trying to help someone understand the needs of chickens as you have zero experience owning them. Good luck with your new flock.

As I said, I grew up with chickens. No experience owning them does not equal no education in keeping them. Thanks though! I will be certain to ask questions if I have them.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC!! :frow

The only thing I would mention in addition to @DobieLover is that in the summer they can be a bit overcrowded if they're only sleeping in there and ventilation is great, but in winter if there are days too cold to let them out, all those beaks are putting out humidity. Humidity can be a killer to chickens if it gets too high as they can develop respiratory infections. Just something to watch for.

I love your intro! Have fun! 😊

@aarendg. @DobieLover is trying to save you a lot of time and money. I made the mistake of buying a coop 'kit" twice - thinking buying another would fix my issue. There are few here that will give you the advice to buy a pre-manufactured coop. After my second mistake I converted a shed. You need enough space for your chickens to be able to be inside all day if needed - like severe weather. I am sorry that us helping you is making you seemingly angry, but, we are just trying to help. Any pre-manufactured coop, no matter where it is bought - if it says 10, it is barely enough room for 3, and has poor ventilation.

I have heard that so many times on here and on chicken sites. Those manufacturers ought to be sued by someone who loses chickens because they believed what they were told by them.
