Hello BYC world!

It sounds like you totally understand my stream of emotions! I vacillated about so many things--yes I do want chickens, no I don't... but that wasn't too bad because I'm a foodie practically have an egg fetish.
And then I agonized over coop design. And then it was breed choice.

I had to have the perfect coop and the perfect breed.
And when I finally made up my mind, all I was left with was

waiting!

So I set up the brooder box about 3 weeks ago... is there an embarrassed face?!

I have name ideas, that came easily. Not going to reveal names until the chicks settle in and the coop is done. I have the plans drawn and working on wood for framing. I will keep you updated though! I'll probably drain my phone battery just snapping pics away when they get here because I seem to do things over-zealously, or not at all.

Everyone is so friendly and encouraging though! Thanks everyone!

I chose Dominiques based on the following criteria:
1) Healthy birds that do well in my climate; sometimes it's in the 90s F in the summer and we had some subzero days plus 35 MPH winds in the winter
2) Prolific egg-layers, not broody all the time
3) Bug eaters! We have a horrible problem with Asian tiger mosquitos, some ticks too
4) Aware of predators and not inclined to go totally wild; as in, they will return to the coop in the evening if I show them a few times, not roost in trees
So please let me know if Dominiques do not fit my criteria :)

I'm already thinking though... If I happen upon Buff Orpingtons the same age as my chicks, I might get two of those too. My teenaged sister has a sort of attachment to big gold hens.
Thanks for the welcome!
You're welcome. Dominiques should fit your criteria quite well. Buff Orpingtons are also a great breed. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds) and they are hardy, friendly and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and good layers of large, brown eggs. Good luck with your flock.

There's nothing better than chick tv (unless it's chicken tv)! Have fun with your little ones

Booooo I hate it when this happens... Worms in the mushrooms I bought at the grocery store!

Good news, now there are members of my household happy to get rid of the worms for me

Now tell me, are there any bugs or worms they shouldn't be eating?
