Hello everyone, I'm loli

I grew up on our family dairy farm where we also raised many other animals including chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, guineas, etc. so I a have been around poultry a good part of my life but have yet to own my own flock. New baby chicks are scheduled to arrive in a couple of weeks, so that is about to change.. lol

I've also been battling health issues for some time now, including an autoimmune allergy called EOE. I am extremely allergic to most antibiotics & even the smallest traces found in store bought eggs or meats cause serious consequences. So we have been spending a fortune buying antibiotic-free organic eggs & decided it's high time we raise our own.

I had forgotten how much fun it is to have chickens, watching their antics, & bonding with the friendly ones. Teaching my kids about them & selecting the different breeds to order has brought back many fond memories... and the waiting... omg, I'm as anxious as the are kids for shipping day!

I'm thrilled to be a part of this great community & the generously shared knowledge & experiences here!

Great to meet you Molly. So many people have taken to raise chickens for meat and /or eggs because they want to know they haven't been given antibiotics etc. Of course your reasons are compelling. So great that you can raise your own flock and have the expertise to do so. Have you decided on breed yet?

Hope you will update once the chicks arrive so we can be excited too. Your kids are going to love this. Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock.

I'm going to pretty much say what everyone else said, but Welcome to BYC! you can find so much helpful information on this site, and everyone is nice and ready to answer questions! I know someone with a similar problem as yours, and they can eat their own chickens' eggs, no problem. It will be a great adventure for you and you kids! Feel free to ask any questions, and keep us posted! :)

@ drumstick diva, yes, we decided & made our order already from My Pet Chicken (though I'm a little nervous about them now, after reading some reviews I didn't see beforehand), the chicks should arrive the week of the 27th. We were originally thinking around 8-10 chickens, well we're up to 17 already.. I can already see where this is going.. I think we're gonna need a bigger coop..
