In the Brooder
Hello BYC! My name is Dakota. I live in central northern Maryland and I have a flock of my own. I thought i'd give my introduction off with the sample questions provided!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I've had chickens for 7 years, getting my first two hens in the sixth grade. I was visiting my older brother when we went to a farm. I bought two hens from the farmer and sneaked them home (my parents were NOT impressed, but they learned to love them
)
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
As of now, we only have four hens, we peaked at eleven hens and one roo, but some have passed naturally from age or became prey for local hawks.
(3) What breeds do you have?
one americana named sweet-pea (given from family)
one blacked cochin named Chloe JR. (given from family)
one buff orpington named Cory (rescued meat hen)
one GIANT waniga orphington named Big Bertha, or just Bea for short. (rescued meat hen)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I think my favorite aspect of raising chickens is getting to know each chicken as a family member. Many people I've introduced my chickens to were very surprised to find they weren't mindless creatures but actually very intelligent and loving birds with completely individual personalities.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I like to draw digitally and create charcoal pieces though I don't have much time for it anymore as i'd like to put into it.
I have a passion for aviation, so I do spend much time in aviation groups similar to this one just... ya know, with planes.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I live in a family of five, including me. My sister has a dog, the family has an american long hair cat that I adore and I have a white bellied caique parrot that I raised from a chick, we also have a few fish.
I currently am working at an Italian restaurant and bar, I love everyone there as if they were family.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC awhile ago when reading about bumblefoot for a friend. I decided to join tonight while reading about the personality of a rosecomb, and figured I should join!
