Hi everyone! I've been perusing the forums for a while when I discoved it through a Google search but I never got around to making an account until now. I've definitely learned a lot from the members of this forum. I'm from Los Angeles County in California and I currently have 6 chickens (5 in-training).
My family had chickens in our backyard when I was younger. There were four of them and I think they were white Leghorns. We pretty much fed them kitchen scraps and they gave us eggs. I had entertained the idea of owning a backyard flock while I was in college but it wasn't feasible at the time.
About two months ago, my uncle brought over a chicken he had found in his backyard. We built her a coop and I had a fun time trying to keep her in her run. I think I've made it escape-proof... for now.
I also decided to purchase some day-old chicks. After a few weeks, I was finally able to find a feed store (Wes's Pets & Feed in El Monte) with a good assortment and I brought home a Cochin, 2 Easter Eggers, and a Orpington. A week later, I bought a Barred Rock from Midway City Feed. Tomorrow, my oldest chicks will turn three weeks-old! They're very energetic and like perching (and scratching!) on my arm.
Besides owning chickens, I like baking bread, playing games, and doodling. I graduated college last year and I'm volunteering at the local Public Health lab.
