Got the chickens last night! 7 young hens and 1 young rooster, all Rhode Island Reds. The hens are young enough that some have their combs still pink and some turned red - I wanted the younger ones mixed in just so I catch them at the beginning of their laying life. It'll be nice to be able to hatch eggs when I want to since I was able to get the rooster, too.

Last night was our first night letting the new chickens out of their new coop, around an hour before sunset. They pecked around, and when it got dark, they did not go back into their coop. One by one, they hop up to the 4 ft high chain link fence, and proceed to go to sleep. They even resisted being pushed off the top of that fence, and I ended up catching them one by one to put them back in the coop. So, was it just not enough time yet (a week) for them to get used to the coop, or what do you think? I was wondering if their perch 2x4 in the coop should be off the floor of the coop, since it's on the floor right now. They sure exhibited how dumb they were in just going to sleep on top of the fence, not easily being scared off as they are in the middle of the day, and in trying to go through the chain link fence.
