Hey everyone, my name is Kretzy.

I am not new to the whole chicken raising thing, but I am new to having my own flock! We just moved back to the "country" and inherited a flock of 8 hens. We are looking to add to our hens next summer/winter and build them a new coop (the one they have now is barely large enough for the 8!)

Right now we have three wellsummers, an easter egger, 1 white rock, 2 black rocks (I think), and a very pretty (non egg laying) black and white chicken that I can not identify with a cute rose comb!

We are hoping to add to a little micro farm, hopefully a dog in the next year and likely a cat (we live next to a large open field and attract a lot of mice!)

We have a little baby boy (not so much baby anymore 2.5 years later) who is extremely interested in helping with the chickens, so if you have any advice on getting kids involved with chicken tending I would appreciate tips and tricks for safe interactions (on both ends)

It is nice to meet all of you!!

With my kids 10, 6, 3 my main focus was teaching them a good and secure way to hold the chickens and then showing them a method of catching them that did not involve casing them (we have 4 very friendly chickens)
My kids love interacting with them and are always (as am I) thrilled to be able to collect eggs. lol I have to remind myself to let the kids get the eggs
I know there are several methods to holding a chicken but I find this one works best for us

Awesome! Thank you!!!
Yes he loves grabbing the eggs! I need to get him a basket or bring out a carton with us, cause he tends to drop them or try to carry too many at once! I haven't let him in with the chickens yet because the previous owners obviously had little to no interaction with them and they are all very skittish and not friendly! That is why we want to add or replace our current flock, so that he can experience them from chicks and hopefully they both can be familiar with each other.
He does love throwing scratch for them, and other treats! and runs up to the fence and tries to "talk" to them in their own "language" "Bock, Bawk, Bwock" it is pretty cute!!!

:welcome:celebrate

Kids LOVE feeding the chickens and collecting eggs. My first advice to you is get them some rubber boots that are the ONLY footwear worn in and around the chicken coop.... and that they learn those are OUTSIDE shoes, never inside.

YES!!!!!! That is part of the hard part with letting him collect eggs, I don't want him tracking the muck in the house! we are working on taking shoes off at the door and all that now!

Just a cheap pair of rain boots will work. Buy them a few sizes too big (it's hilariously cute watching my 8 y/o stomp around in mine or DHs muck boots when his were wet).
