Hello! Cluck cluck!

:welcome

As long as your coop has plenty of ventilation and drafts don't blow directly on your chickens, they should do well during the winter. When I lived in WY, I wrapped 3 sides of my run with heavy duty plastic to keep blowing snow out of the run and the flock did great all winter.

Hello all you fellow chicken loves!

I will always say I'm new to chickens because I always have questions, but I AM new as my husband and I started chicken-ing as of one year ago!

We began with the plan for three chickens, well, by 'plan' I mean we were dreaming of it for years, I saw chicks and we jumped for it. Then I saw there were other breeds available and we jumped again and ended up with 6. One of our loves flew the coop and met an ultimately end :( after her funeral, chicken math calculated we needed another 5 to fill the hole in our hearts.

My Ladies, the original six five :( are Buff Orpington (CreamPuff), Olive Egger/Americana? (Minerva was a rescue), Barred Rock (Xena), RIR (Radish but she should be called MEGAPHONE),and EE (Nugget, as in chicken)

We have five as of yet unnamed; 2 EE, 1 Australorp, 1 Mottled Java, 1 bantam. The last two might be in drag. We will see.

My husband and I work from home so the way to destress is to go outside and sit with the chickens. We love animals and we enjoy gaining the trust of the girls, collecting eggs, and we've even spent our evenings catching grasshoppers to throw to the girls while they are freeranging in the backyard.

Other than that we spend our time playing with our two dogs, playing computer games, watching IT Crowd or Psych, and playing D&D.

I'm here because we are heading into our first winter with the ladies and my husbands handbuilt coop is super great, but I'm always wanting to know beforehand what problems I might face.

Plus, anyone who is ANYONE with a chicken apparently is a member here so I CANT miss out :) Thanks for having me!
Welcome. Winters are a lot better for chickens than heat. Just keep them dry and well ventilated in their coops.
