Hey guys, I decided it was time to get some feathered friends again and see what else I can learn.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I first helped take care of chickens when I was a little kid, and have had them on the family properties off and on over the years since. This year is the first time being the solo shepherd of them however. First year with ducks too!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 11 chickens this year and one duck.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have Light Brahmas, Buff Orpingtons, Barred Plymouth Rock, and a mallard duck.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I really enjoy “Chicken TV” and every time I’ve kept chickens, it’s been fun to see all of their quirks. My current flock seems to prefer jumping everywhere to travel instead of walking haha.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I like to go hiking when I have the time, when Minnesota isn’t a frozen tundra LOL. Otherwise I keep myself busy with projects on the property. Woodworking, welding, etc. Currently working on a garage and rebuilding the chicken coop. I also have recently gotten back into programming and have built a new 3D Printer and am looking forward to fabricating new things again.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
People joke about our neighborhood as the village since we all live on adjoining lots, we’ve got 6 little shepherds and a collie to help out around the properties. I made a change from fabrication work back to IT and programming work to give me more time at home.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I actually stumbled into this forum early spring, I made the decision to move new residents into the coop and try my hand with raising ducks too. The store I received them from had a discounted assortment of ducklings since unfortunately a lot were ill and they didn’t sell much for medicine either. This forum really ended up being a big help though, being a treasure trove of information and saving my mallard. I have much to learn and thank you guys for having me!
