Hello!

I'm a longtime chicken dreamer who recently acquired my first 4 week old babies. It was rather sudden, however, and all we had time to do was throw a coop together. For the past 5 weeks, they've sadly been mostly confined in an indoor, 24 square foot area (although we have just had an incredibly severe bout of airborne(?) bird flu where I live, so maybe that's partly for the best). Right now I'm working on making a run for them.

As far as I can tell, they're all hens, although the feed store where someone I know bought them for Easter supposedly said one of them was a cock. Then again, the store also apparently had my Cornish X mixed in with the layers. I guess they assumed people would buy the Easter chicks and not care what breed they were, which I suppose I don't, really.

They are:
Star (RIR)
Roscoe (maybe RIR, but has a bit of a downward-pointing tail, so possibly something else)
Monty (Cornish X Rock--I plan to undergo the long and stressful, but I hope worth-it, journey of keeping the sweet bird as a pet)
Iggy (White Leghorn)
...and Big Jeff. She's black with a few brown feathers and loves to fly more than any of the others. I'm completely stumped on what breed she is and will post pictures in another forum soon to see if anyone knows.

So that's my long-winded introduction!

I'm excited to start finding my way around here and learning more in addition to all the awesome stuff I've already picked up from this site! Thanks everybody!

We've had several new members getting Cornish x instead of the breeds they wanted. It's really hard on folks if they have young kids hoping to make pets out of them.

I think the best you can do with your Cornish x is to make sure it doesn't eat too much, and has to exercise to get to it's feed. Otherwise they like to plant themselves in front of a feeder and stay there.

Welcome to Backyard chickens.
