I'll start off by saying my son and I have been to this site a lot. Everytime we google or ask Alexa questions about our chickens this site pops right up with tons of useful information we been using since we bought our baby chick's. Thank you.
October 8th 2020 was the day we were at Rural King purchasing dog food and a chain for the chainsaw when my son (G2) came up to me at the register with a box that looked like a happy meal from McDonalds, set it on the counter, dug $12 out his pocket he saved from mowing grass and such this summer , handed the cash to me and said don't worry Dad I only got 6. "Six what? ". Real cute cuddly baby chickens Dad. Wait till ya see em, and I'll keep em in my room, promise."
So ,the hard-nosed tough guy I am looked him directly in his eyes and said "OK, I guess", excuse us we're gonna have to get a few more things Maam".
.
He had 6 baby White Leghorns in that box.
We got the baby medicated feed, food , water bowl the starter kit w/ lamp and such.
On the way home I started to get a little nervous. He starts up the google. Begins telling me these things are great flyers , roost in trees and are a noisy breed. He found your site when I told him. "I don't think we can have chickens in the back yard , omg".
He found your website and a post someone from our city made years ago. It states as long as they do not become a nuisance ...it's game on.
I lived at my Grandparents farm till I was in 2nd grade then visited thereafter. So, I am a little familiar with chickens.
"OH...MY...GOSH.... the dog , G2!"
What if Riley ( our rescued female Cane Corso) tries to eat the chickens!!!!??
She gets possums , groundhogs and raccoons in our garden !
He says hang on a minute Dad, don't even worry. Guess what says here ,the Leghorns are Italian and so is Riley ! They will get along great!
. Cracked me up.
Having the chick's in the house Riley acted like a mother to them after a few days.
They would be tweeting and she would go upstairs and lay next to the old toy box G2 kept them in. Almost guarding them.
We kept saying "look at the babies, it's a baby be easy". That's what we did with my grandson Jaxon when my daughter had him and Riley understood.
We lost 2 chickens which was sad. One was my fault, kinda. The chickens had poop all over them and I told him to wash the one. G2 washed her dried her and not even 10 minutes later she just passed away....gone. We buried her in the back while my son scorned me and blamed me for making him wash her.
Than we lost one more a few weeks later. We had taken them outside and brought them back in. Next morning they where all on top of one and is seems as though they crushed her is my best explanation.
So we have 4 chickens, built a coop and got them outside and accustomed , thank God, before winter. These crazy chickens were escaping the room, chirping, flying and pooping all over the place. My daughter Morgan (21) was yelling at G2 (12) about the chickens coming downstairs getting feathers and poop everywhere , on the dirty clothes in her clothes basket. She was sayinh "Jaxon (2)is gonna get a disease from the mess."
They can really make a mess in just a couple of hours home alone It!
It all worked out though.
My kids didn't kill each other and the chickens are happy in there new home in the backyard.
Here at home it is just my son and I.
My daughter hops in-between here and my Moms, she is a nurse and works right by "Grammys " house about 45 min away so it's easier for her with the baby.
A month ago we got 3 older chick's from someone needing to get rid of them
2 barred rock I think and a gold comet I think, not quite sure.
I think I addressed all the questions on the new members page.
Oh, we decided to sign up because we really have to ask the community questions about one of our hens, and the breed of the new ones ,which we will in the appropriate forum.
Have a great day.
