Hello everyone, my name is Keylin and I will need all the help I can get raising chickens. I was born and raised in Cuba and growing up there were always chickens in our backyard, they would just roam around at their own free will, no coop, nothing special, in Cuba there are very few predators that would go after chickens, we have the occasional backyard rat, cats, etc.
I really wasn't involved in caring for the chickens as a child for obvious reasons, I guess, so my knowledge of them is very limited. When I was a little girl I did get attacked by a rooster that became dinner shortly after the attack, it was probably doing its job but I was no more than four years old and the rest is history.
Fast-forward to the present time and my husband and I just got the blessings of acquiring a house on a five acre lot. Along with the property we got nine chickens and very little info about them by the former owners, they did take the rooster away with them 🤷
I used to let the chickens free range for most of the day and by 3-4pm the latest I would put them back in their house. Well, a month after implementing our new routine Mr. Fox came by and in between that and some sort of disease we are currently in possession of zero chickens.
Why Im I here you may ask, well a friend currently hatched some chicks and has offered to give all to us, so I'm trying to gather as much information and prepare as much as I can to see if I can do better next time around.
My husband and I have two daughters, one is three years old, the other one is ten months old. We have two potbelly piglets (Chicharrón and Chorizo).
My husband is an engineer and I am a medical laboratory scientist, but I have been a stay at home mom since my three year old was born.
A friend told us about this wonderful group and I feel an urgency to make sure my next chickens have the best life possible.
Thank you for reading my super long post 💓

What a nice intro, Keylin! Congratulations on getting your house with five acres!

Sorry to hear about your "inherited" chickens and the fox, but kudos to you for joining this incredible group of folks who are always willing to help guide you, support you when things get challenging and applaud your successes.

My family also had chickens, and those birds were raised with much less care and concern than mine today. Of course, my dad also butchered chickens, and none of my beloved and named birds will ever end up on a dinner table!

Your piggies are adorable, and I wish you well with your soon-to-be-new flock. Welcome to BYC!
