Hello to all and thank you for reading.
I am new to chickens, but have been dreaming about this for years. I recently purchased a home on 30 acres of land that came with a barn that was used for horses over 15 years ago. I will be purchasing 4 hens and a rooster that are approximately 1 year old. I would like to use one of the stalls for my chicken coop. I have made nesting boxes and perches for them along with adding wood chips to the floor. I also will be constructing a door. My plan is to keep them in the barn stall at night and let them out in the morning to free range. One issue I foresee is that the barn does not have a door that I want to keep open for them to access their coop during the day (my hubby doesn’t want them pooping on his tools and equipment stored in the barn). I would need to cut a hole in the barn to create a door for them, which I would prefer not to do. Do you think it will be an issue not allowing them access to their coop during the day?
I’m also concerned with them laying eggs wherever they please. Would it be best if I just let them out late morning and brought them back in early evening to encourage the use of the nesting boxes?
Sorry for all the questions. Clearly I am new to this. I hope you will have some insight. Thank you in advance!
