Sorry took so long to respond. Didn't see this until today. Still getting used to notifications. My outdoor chicks with mama I think 3 are roosters and two ate hens. My eggs I only had 3 hatch. I bought a cheap incubator just before lockdown thinking it was better than my homemade one. I wound up with only two that pipped and hatched normally and one that pipped wrong end and after 12 hours I helped it out. I think the other 7 drowned as they were fully formed never pipped externally or internally and yolk sac was absorbed. They were yellow and sticky. 1 was only like a wing and rotten, weird. I am happy to have at least 3 healthy chicks. If I start getting too many roos I will pick my favorite few and sell the rest. Even though I'm new to this I love it so much. Chickens are awesome.

Well hay there Ashley Welcome to Backyard Chickens I was a pro handler for 32 years
had to look at your breed knew it as a Caucasian shepherd dog back then from Russia[/QUOTE

Yeah ovcharka and shepherd are used interchangeably. I love him . He's 215 lbs and not fully mature. He is 1.5 yrs old. He's great with all kids and animals. He does not like strangers or my Jack Russell barking at chickens. Lol .

Nice!

You can build a much better incubator than the cheap commercial incubators.

Do you have a picture of your home made incubator?

Not on my phone and I disassembled it when I bought the cheap one. It was a plastic tote with plexiglass view hole on top on side cut out and taped back as a hinge to open and close to turn eggs. There was a grate 1 inch off bottom with water tray underneath . I was using a 65 watt bulb inside and temp fluctuated from 99 to 102. Humidity was around 35 until day 18 when they went into incubator. The humidity meter was way off and it was much higher than it read. I think the eggs were "sticky chicks"? I'm not sure though. This is my brooder with my 3 chicks that made it.
