As my screen name implies, I'm new to chickens . We bought 4 Silkie chicks in mid-July.
It all started when I originally wanted to buy prefab coop/hutch for our rabbit. I didn't fork out $200+ for a kit because I learned rabbits can die from fright; a predator simply trying to break in their hutch could kill them. Sounds crazy but that seems to be the deal.
I had mentioned wanting one to a friend of mine and he brought me several pieces from 3 different kits . I am SO GLAD I never paid money for over one since they're essentially made from balsa wood!
I modded the pieces in order to build a single structure and decided I might as well get chickens.
Only problem is it doesn't have secure roof and i realized the prefab coop, as-is, wasn't strong enough to support a real roof. So I took it all apart again and did the best I could to add adequate structural support while still utilizing the prefab panels.
Searching for an appropriate design is what brought me to this site.
I'm a single mom of a 13-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy. I've always been an animal lover, my kids too. I'm an equestrian, riding Hunter/Jumpers growing up. My daughter is leasing a horse and rides also.
We have 4 dogs, a cat, rabbit and now 4 silkies in the urban city of Beaverton, Oregon.
