I just joined also and have thoroughly this website. The people are very positive and the information they post is very informative.
We are just in the process of building a garden shed/small chicken coop(5 chickens) on the side of our house....a do it yourself job. But the ideas you get from BYC will get you through everything and anything. So don't be afraid, go for it!

Check out the Washingtonian thread in the Where are you forum. We are a pretty friendly bunch. And more than willing to help each other. About coops- you are not going to find a better resource than the BYC coop section. Coops vary quite a bit. Do some reading, Ask some questions, Ask for pix, Have fun and keep us all up to date with how it's going.

I utilize www.youtube.com for a visual on building. They often make some coops online from scratch and they look exactly like the original ones.

I am thinking of moving to Spanaway, and would like to know how you found "city ordinances" about keeping back yard chickens there. Thanks in advance....

I'm from Camas, WA and getting started as well! I know Portland, OR has a LOT of backyard coops as it's become a lot more popular there along with organic gardening. I don't know how far away you are but that's where we got our inspiration
