Hi! :celebrate
I am a stay at home mom of 4 (ages 19, 11, 9 and 4) with an amazing “step” child (age 18, but he’s been with us since age 3-yikes we are getting old !)
We have various pets among us and I am the main caretaker of them all. It keeps me busy and I love their companionship.
I am new to raising chickens as this is our first actual home with a yard where we are allowed and I’m so excited to learn from y’all!
Thanks for having this site where “backyard chicken owners” can come to to find real time advice from real time owners.

1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes! Looking for fertilized eggs to incubate, hatch, and raise to join our “circus”, as I like to call this chaos of all the kids and animals I’m in charge of!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? None, but hoping to hatch and raise between 2-5!

(3) What breeds do you have? None, but I’ve researched a little. Any guidance as to the best breeds for families with children and, if there are any that do exceptionally well with other family pets (although everyone will never be unsupervised together as safety is my utmost concern), that would be amazing!

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I think I’m drawn to the way they just waddle around, pecking, and looking for food looking all awkward and curious (hey, kinda like me I guess ). I love things that aren’t a “traditional” or cuddly pet (I could sit and watch my hermit crab colony for hours!)

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? All these kids and creature don’t leave me much time for anything else, so I guess you could say that they’re all my “hobby”.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Currently we have 2 cats, a 15 week old puppy, 2 leopard geckos, 14 hermit crabs, and I breed mealworms and roaches as feeders. My 19 year old just got her first apartment and took her hamster, leopard gecko, and Panther chameleon with her. I’m gonna miss “babysitting” them lol! I also just recently released 3 juvenile squirrels back out into freedom after my son brought home 3 newly born and injured babies. I syringe fed them around the clock, snuggled them in my bra, weaned them to solids by preparing and offering foods to meet their growing nutritional needs, built a transition cage (with the help of my dad) for them to “practice “ going outside, and then helped them transition to a great life outdoors!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I found this through a google search of where to find local fertilized eggs. I belong to a few forums for leopard geckos, hermit crabs, and chameleons because they have such unique and very strict husbandry requirements and my OCD makes me research and research to get it right for these creatures counting on me for survival!
